I’m Ready for Fall…My Weather Isn’t
The little ways I’m welcoming the season without rushing it
Are you noticing the season beginning to shift? I am, too. And while it may still be 80-something degrees outside, I’m ready for just a little change inside.
The trees are still green.
The afternoons are still hot.
We’re still wearing shorts.
But something in me is ready for a change.
So instead of decorating our home for fall all at once, I’m starting small—changing the way our home looks, feels, smells, sounds, and even what we’re cooking.
I want the inside of our home to feel one step ahead of what’s happening outside—not three months ahead.
Fall doesn’t have to arrive all at once. It can come in layers.
Let Outside Lead the Way
The hydrangeas in our yard are beginning to fade, even though nearly everything else is still green. Instead of reaching for faux fall stems, I clipped what was already showing me that the season is changing.
I love the faded, muted color tucked into the blue-and-white pieces we already have. It feels like fall is beginning to arrive—without pretending it's already here.
Look around your own yard—or even on your next walk—and notice what's beginning to change. A fading bloom or branch that's just starting to turn may be all your home needs.
Warm Up What You Already Have
I don't pack away my blue-and-white pieces when September arrives. I just start changing what's around them.
Fall becomes a layer, not a theme.
A branch tucked into a blue-and-white ginger jar. Wood cutting boards leaning against the backsplash. A little more copper and brass. A bowl of apples and pears on the kitchen counter. A woven basket or heavier throw brought back into the room.
Let the Light Change
Light is one of the first ways you feel a season changing inside a home.
I start turning the lamps on a little earlier. The bookshelf lights glow in the evening, a candle gets lit around dinnertime, and the overhead lights stay off. Somehow even the kitchen feels warmer by six o'clock.
Bring Back One Scent
Don’t buy 12 pumpkin candles.
Just the first fall candle.
There's something about lighting that first fall candle that makes the change of season feel official—even when it's still hot outside.
The candle I’m burning: Warm Vanilla Oak — warm, cozy, and just enough to make the house feel like fall without going full pumpkin-spice yet. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Let the Kitchen Lead the Way
I’m not quite ready for chili weather—but I am ready to turn the oven back on.
Something with apples → Peanut Butter Honey Apple Nachos
Something warm but not heavy → Creamy Spinach & Tomato Baked Penne
Something to bake Saturday morning → Cheddar Bacon & Scallion Quiche
Chili gets its turn later. It’s a Halloween night tradition in our family that I can’t wait to share with you!
Change What Gets Left Out
Summer has its things that naturally live around the house. Fall does, too.
A throw appears on the chair. A favorite mug stays near the coffee maker. A basket holds blankets. Maybe a book lands on the side table.
None of these things are really “fall décor.” They're simply little signs that we're beginning to live differently in our home.
Change What the House Sounds Like
A home has a soundtrack, too. As the days begin getting shorter, I find myself wanting ours to feel a little warmer.
Music is often playing while I'm cooking dinner or we're settling back into the house at the end of the day. It doesn't necessarily have to be “fall music.” It's simply another way I can change the atmosphere of our home without changing a single thing we own.
What I'm playing around the house right now:
Goodness of God — CeCe Winans
Always Only Jesus — MercyMe
If I Got Jesus — Ben Fuller
And Then…STOP
Don't finish decorating.
Leave the pumpkins in the bins.
Leave the mums at the store.
Don't put fall leaves everywhere.
Because part of enjoying a season is allowing it to arrive.
There will be a Saturday when the air finally feels different. The mums will make sense. The pumpkins will come out. Chili will sound good again.
But we're not there yet.
And I don't want to rush through this little in-between season just because I'm excited about what's next.
I want to notice fall arriving.
Gather well,
Heather
